Each line links a graphic to a well-known place on the website. In cases where an '-on' and '-off' appear, these graphics are rollover graphics and they dynamically change depending on if a user's mouse is hovering over or off of the graphic. To replace a graphic, say the homepage's logo, replace the URL on that line with the URL to your custom graphic. For example, the Phil Andrews theme is nothing more than the Red Velvet theme with the line homepage-off=http://www.proteomecommons.org/images/main-page-top-nrpp.jpg changed to homepage-off=http://www.proteomecommons.org/images/main-page-top.jpg.
The lines that start with "slice=" represent the cake slices that appear in the top left of most pages on ProteomeCommons.org. This graphic rotates based on how many pages a user has viewed, i.e. it looks like bites of the cake are being eaten as the user clicks through the website. You can make your own animation series and set it using the "slice=" lines. The order in which the animation will play matches the order of the numbers in the sliceX= lines, i.e. slice0, slice1, slice2, slice3, etc.
For the time being, only cake themes that are hosted by ProteomeCommons.org can be used. This is to prevent someone from making and showing an illicit theme. Contact Jayson Falkner and he'll help you get your theme appearing on this website.
Here are the requirements for a complete theme. If you are making a theme for fun, consider these loose guidelines. If you are trying to make a cake theme to satisfy a bounty project, this is the formal set of images that you must make.
The large graphic on the main page is the most visible graphic on ProteomeCommons.org. It is intended to give visitors some impressive eye candy that makes them feel as if this page is done with professional style. Two graphics are required: one for the mouseoff image and one for the mouseon image. These two graphics are respectively mapped to the homepage-off and homepage-on theme file entries.
For an example, here are the two graphics being used by the current theme.
The news image on the main page is meant to be a pictoral link to the news page, one of the site's most used pages. There is both a mouseoff and mouseover image for this graphic and they are respectively mapped to the homepage-news-off and homepage-news-on theme file entries.
For an example, here are the two graphics being used by the current theme.
The tools image on the main page is meant to be a pictoral link to the tools page, one of the site's most used pages. There is both a mouseoff and mouseover image for this graphic and they are respectively mapped to the homepage-tools-off and homepage-tools-on theme file entries.
For an example, here are the two graphics being used by the current theme.
The more image on the main page is meant to be a pictoral link to the more page, which links to all of the site's less-used pages. There is both a mouseoff and mouseover image for this graphic and they are respectively mapped to the homepage-more-off and homepage-more-on theme file entries.
For an example, here are the two graphics being used by the current theme.
The cake slice animation series is one of the most liked set of graphics on ProteomeCommons.org. The cake piece in the top-left corner loses bits and pieces of cake as a user clicks through the website. This animation corresponds with a series of graphics. There can be as many or few cake slice pictures in the animation series, but they all must be mapped in the theme file. The theme file must contain a line that starts with slicex= where the x is replaced with a number representing where in the animation series the slice should appear, e.g. slice0=, slice1=, slice2=, etc. See the Red Velvet theme above for a complete theme file example with 16 different slices in the animation series. You should have at least 6 images in your animation series to give users a nice animation experience.
For an example, here are the current slices in this theme's animation series.
